LIV Student Membership: Bridging the gap between law school and the legal profession.
Dear Law Students,
As the Manager of the Young Lawyers Section of the Law Institute of Victoria, I have the pleasure of meeting hundreds of law students every year. One thing that hasn’t changed since I was a law student, is the focus on passing exams to graduate. But what comes next?
In my role, I have many conversations with students who are unsure of what lies beyond law school and how to prepare for the transition from law student to lawyer. Students know they need to connect with the legal profession and develop a whole set of skills beyond what is taught in law school. However, with limited time and resources, I know this task can seem daunting.
I wish someone had told me as a law student there was an easy (and free) way to develop networks and professional skills, along with gaining a deeper understanding of the legal profession. If I could go back, I'd tell myself about the LIV Student Membership.
The Law Institute of Victoria plays a critical role in bridging the gap between law school and the legal profession. Providing you with a free LIV Student Membership during your law degree bridges this gap and provides you with benefits that can significantly enhance your career journey.
If I had to sum up the key benefits of being involved with the LIV as a student, they would be:
Networking Opportunities
Networking is an important component of career development in the legal profession. While you may find the concept of networking intimidating, the LIV provides numerous platforms for you to connect with legal professionals. From attending events to engaging in YL Committees, these interactions can lead to valuable mentorship opportunities and even future employment.
Career Information and DevelopmentThrough events such as the LIV Legal Career Pathways, Career Spotlight Series and online resources, the LIV encourages you to look beyond the more traditional pathways so you can find a pathway that aligns with your values and career goals.
Professional DevelopmentBeyond academic learning, the LIV offers programs that focus on the development of practical skills essential for a successful legal career. Workshops on legal drafting, negotiation, and public speaking help bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application.
Membership of a Professional Community
Being part of the LIV means becoming part of a respected community of legal professionals. This sense of belonging can provide support throughout your law school experience and beyond. You are also part of an organisation that advocates on behalf of the legal profession, ensuring your rights and interests as a future lawyer are protected and promoted.
My final words of advice - don’t wait until you graduate. Take advantage of the opportunities available to you now as a student through LIV membership. It is an investment in your future and will provide you with a strong foundation for a fulfilling legal career.
I hope to see you soon.
Warm regards
Kathryn Smith
LIV Young Lawyers Manager
