Sam Romeril, now Lawyer of Heinz Law, pursued a double degree at Deakin University, studying a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting). While studying, Sam gaining practical experience at an audit firm. Initially inclined towards a career in commerce and accounting, a persistent curiosity about the legal profession prompted him to explore this avenue further.
After speaking with Rick Blanchfield and Dermot Conaughton of our firm, whom he had known from his time at St Patricks College, he arranged a 3-week work experience placement with us. Those 3 weeks proved to be transformative, igniting a passion for the complexities of legal practice that he had not anticipated. Following his work experience, Sam received an offer for a Supervised Legal Traineeship at the firm. Eager to delve deeper into the legal realm, he accepted the opportunity.
Throughout his traineeship, Sam gained experience and developed his skills and expertise across various areas of law, with a particular focus on Wills, Estates, and Commercial law. Upon completing his traineeship, he was offered a permanent position within the firm in our Wills & Estates and Private Client Advisory Departments.
Sam now enjoys the dynamic nature of his work, where each day brings new challenges and experiences, travelling between our Ballarat and Geelong Offices. His responsibilities are diverse, including reviewing asset holdings and entity structures for clients with complex personal investment and business structures. Additionally, he drafts various legal documents, from standard Wills and Powers of Attorney to more intricate testamentary trust Wills, Trust Deeds, and numerous other documents relevant to asset restructuring with consideration given to any available tax concessions and/or exemptions.
Furthermore, he regularly meets with clients, either in person or via electronic means, to discuss their instructions, review documents, and facilitate signings. Occasionally, he travels to meet clients at their homes or at the offices of their other advisors (e.g. accountant or financial planner).
Sam also finds satisfaction in collaborating with diverse individuals, learning not only about the law but also drawing insights from their own experiences and expertise. This extends to professionals from related industries such as accountants and financial advisors.
When asked about his time at Heinz Law, Sam emphasises the culture and the individuals he has the privilege of working alongside. The supportive atmosphere fosters collaboration and personal growth.
