Week 5… more commonly known as survival week. This week is generally the week when assignments are starting to build up, emotions are high and you’re already behind in your work. Assignment time can be hard guys, it’s a tough and gruelling time and it’s all too easy to spiral out in.

So… this weeks blog post isn’t about how to study, it isn’t anything law related at all actually but it’s important. This week we’re looking at ways of self-care.

Self-care is vital, it’s a way to unwind and relax, you need to take care of yourself or you’ll get burnt out, flunk your exams and just be miserable. Here are DLSS Geelong’s top 5 ways of self-care.

1. Bubble bath and a drink

If you have a bath in your house then you’re lucky and I hate you a little bit. Having a super bubbly bath with some candles and an alcoholic drink of your choice can really help to unwin(e)d and get your head back into a non-panicky stage. Bubble baths are amazing, and NOT just for girls. Men you need to give this stuff a go, ok? For me. Just try it and I promise you’ll love it. Also, fun fact, plastic containers float in the bath so… snacks.

2. Colouring

Yes, colouring. I know you’ve heard so so much about adult colouring books but this writer swears by them. I’m an avid collector of them and one of my favs is an adult sweary book with lovely swearwords I like to colour in and give to certain people. It’s fun. It takes your mind off the study and actually kind of helps you remember things. By doing such a manual task, your brain is able to work quietly in the background and you could even end up figuring out things you’ve been stuck on for weeks.

3. Exercise

CARDIO! Ok, so not many people like cardio but even a short walk around the block can relax your mind and the exercise ensures you’re not getting restless staying at your desk all day. Not to mention you can walk off all those study snacks. It doesn’t even have to be around the block! There’s a 24 hour Kmart in Belmont, the amount of times I’ve gone there at 3am to get my mind off study is beyond funny.

4. Take a night off

Just CANNOT get that concept from equity or admin? Take the night off. You’re probably overthinking things, take the night off to just chill. Yeah I know.. law students can’t ‘chill’ but I swear, taking the night off and watching a movie will help you relax, sleep better and you’ll most likely wake up and be able to better understand the concept you’re struggling with. Take a long shower/bath, chuck on your oldest, comfiest pjs and watch a movie in bed with your favourite snack.

5. The little things matter

Do you have something that you absolutely love to do but simply hadn’t had a chance to do since Uni started? Something small? Go do it. Whether it’s washing your puppy pal or even just playing an Xbox game or three. Remove yourself from the world of exams and escape for a bit, not to long but enough to unwind and chill. By taking a small break and getting back to it, you’re less likely to binge Netflix as well. Try it.

You may have already heard, we are having our AGM on Monday 14th September to elect our new 2021 committee! These positions could be filled by LITERALLY ANYONE – you could be in your final year, your first year or even an off-campus student! But you might be thinking, why should I waste my time? What’s the benefits?

SOCIAL SKILLS If you’re one of those students that hides in your room on res, this is a great way to get out and meet people that face the same struggles and share the same interests with you. You will also get to meet people that you would not have likely come across if you hide under your blanket watching Netflix all day. People from older year levels who have completed classes that you’re yet to take! It’s such a great way to get first-hand experience on how to tackle particular subjects, buy and sell textbooks or even tips for exams!

MEMBERSHIP SKILLS Even if you fill a position that’s not as active as others, you still establish a number of qualities simply by becoming a member, you’ll have the chance to develop commitment, team work and time management skills.

You get to see the ins and outs of how everything is debated and created! We hold regular meetings and get to attend all of our events and functions. All of this activity can really help to enrich your university experience

EMPLOYABILITY Building a social network, and developing membership skills leads to one big thing every student is striving for – A JOB. Joining a society is voluntary experience and this looks pretty impressive when you’re trying to get a job, internship or graduate position. That sounds pretty damn good doesn’t it?

FINAL NOTE

The work we all do is rewarding to say the least. We balance this alongside full time work commitments, full time study, volunteering for other organisations, travelling overseas, living alone or with friends. We truly are a wonderful and unique group.
